Occlusion In Clinical Practice

Occlusion In Clinical Practice

A module of Young Clinician Series

Lecture Overview

Occlusion has notoriously been a concept that is difficult to grasp. Multiple philosophies that have been presented over the years only serve to confuse the dental community even further. However, this doesn’t change the crucial role occlusion has in the successful treatment and well being of the patient.

Restorations placed without consideration for occlusion can result in poor bio-mechanics, leading to complications like pain, tooth mobility and eventual breakdown of the restoration. Mismanagement of occlusion by the restorative dentist may trigger changes to the patient’s stomatognathic system, resulting in greater distress, both for the patient and the dentist.

This lecture aims to:

  • Provide an understanding of neurophysiological, anatomical and biomechanical principles that dictate how and where the teeth occlude, facilitating the treatment in different dental scenarios.
  • Discuss essential elements of occlusal stability and skills to implement a comprehensive occlusal evaluation and form appropriate diagnoses.
