Treating Worn Dentition

Lecture Overview

Worn dentition is becoming increasingly common in modern day dentistry and may present challenging treatment considerations to dentists. There are a large variety of conservative options available for treatment, but this variety may also lead to confusion and apprehension. Fear of the severe wear case failing may also cause dentists to hesitate in treatment and doubt the appropriate next step. Understanding the cause of the wear, management of the worn teeth and making the right restorative decisions to cater to the patient’s needs are therefore key to successful treatment.

This lecture will discuss the various ways to treat patients with worn dentition as well as how to identify the patterns and behaviours that lead to wear. Diagnoses, treatment plans and management of severe wear will also be shared to increase the predictability and longevity of the solutions by basing treatment decisions on how the patient created the wear.

The lecture aims to:

  • Evaluate the types of wear and the indications for treatment options
  • Discuss diagnoses and treatment plans for wear patients, including etiologies of wear, patterns of wear and determining when interdisciplinary treatment is required
  • Discuss the occlusion best suited based on what a patient does with their teeth
  • Manage aesthetic outcomes based on how tooth position, gingival levels and occlusion change as teeth wear
  • Understand vertical dimension, and when and how to change it
  • Explore the differences between multiple interdisciplinary treatment options
