Oral appliance therapy to manage obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and snoring is a growing field that incorporates knowledge from both the medical and dental perspectives. Oral appliances are increasingly prescribed as a non-invasive treatment option for selected patients with OSA and those who do not tolerate nor prefer continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).
This lecture aims to share:
- Concepts of dental sleep medicine, pathophysiology of OSA, and the role of dentistry in the management of OSA as part of a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
- The range of oral appliances, their fabrication and use, skills to select appropriate appliance for patients and understand the indications and contra-indications for treatment.
