Webinar Synopsis
- International orthodontists guidelines increasingly emphasize the importance of early orthodontic screening. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends a first orthodontic consultation before the age of 7, while the French Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS) advocates screening as early as age 6. These recommendations reflect a fundamental biological principle: early childhood is the period during which craniofacial growth and orofacial functions are most responsive to simple and effective intervention.
- Between the ages of 3 and 6 years, many children presenting with malocclusion or dentofacial disharmony remain clinically simple cases.
At this stage, early functional intervention can guide jaw growth, restore efficient physiological functions-such as breathing, swallowing, and tongue posture-and positively influence overall facial development.
- When early management is absent, orofacial dysfunctions tend to become progressively reinforced and deeply embedded at a neuromotor level. Concurrently, jaw growth may develop in an unfavorable direction. Over time, conditions that were initially simple may evolve into complex skeletal imbalances, requiring more demanding orthodontic treatment and carrying an increased risk of post-treatment instability.
- The purpose of this webinar is to provide a clear, structured introduction to modern functional orthodontics. It is not intended to be a comprehensive training course, but rather an initial clinical orientation designed to explain the fundamental principles, key indications, and clinical reasoning underlying this approach. The content is supported by recent scientific evidence and illustrative clinical cases.
- Functional orthodontics is an accessible discipline for dentists, who play a key role in early detection. The appliances used are intentionally simple-primarily functional education appliances-and clinical success depends largely on accurate diagnosis, based on careful, systematic clinical observation.
- This webinar will demonstrate how functional orthodontics can be naturally integrated into a modern, preventive, patient-centered dental practice, while emphasizing the importance of structured training for clinicians who wish to further develop their expertise in this field.
